2/10 Day +18 Neuts at 20

Been a bit crazy around here last 4 days. To begin, after the great news of 10 neutrophils (I like to call them neuts) the next day they didn’t see any. So back down to 0. But then yesterday they came back to 20. And today, 20 again. Dr Becker said “thus starts the long slow engraftment of a single cord-blood transplant.”  Maybe this is what they meant when they said it takes longer to engraft. Cells come in early, but then it just takes awhile to get to 1000 and out of immunosuppressed threshold. We’ll see I guess. Healthy humans have neutrophil levels in the 1.75k-7k range. More when fighting an infection and less when you’re just hanging out healthy

OK more on the story of the neuts later. I got to get to bed and it’s hard read what I type with my left eye in its current state of healing from Proton Therapy.

  1. So good to hear those neuts are creepin’ on in!! We’ve been thinking about you on the daily, and you were extremely missed at Kirkwood. If it’s any consolation, the slopes were pretty iced up (or looked that way from the hot tub) and they will undoubtedly be better on a return trip when you and Bree and Alpen can join.

    1. Good to hear. FOMO reduced from 10 to 9. When I take my showers I pretend I am in a hot tub at Kirkwood, or a hot springs in the woods. I'll try to make it happen next year!

  2. Glad they’re shuffling in, Derek! Even if a bit more slowly than ideal. Hopefully they spike to 1000 before too long — the hockey stick graph we like to see! (<- bad climate change joke). Agreed with Julie — we were reminiscing a lot about our snowed in, increasingly food scarce, week up at Kirkwood with you. Three years ago this week! Really missed you there and look forward to seeing you soon.

    1. Thanks Hannah. And I appreciated the bad climate change joke too.
